F5G and Evolution towards F6G

With the fiber-to-everywhere vision, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) established at the beginning of 2020 an industry specification group (ISG) dedicated to the definition and specification of the 5th generation fixed network (F5G). Since then, the first release of 14 use cases of F5G have been published, and the second release of 18 use cases is forthcoming. Reaching deeper to final access points, optical fibre will realize its full potential to support a fully connected, intelligent world with high bandwidth, high reliability, low latency, and low energy consumption. This workshop is intended to provide a timely update on the new progresses made on F5G. Particularly, proof-of-concept demonstrations of several use cases published in F5G Use Case Release 1, such as cloud virtual reality (Cloud-VR) and fiber-to-the-room (FTTR), will be presented. In addition, the emerging use cases to be released by early 2022 will be described. Among them are: industrial PON, rural broadband, and edge/cloud-based control of industrial robots and automated guided vehicles etc. This workshop also aims to encourage stimulating discussion on the future evolution toward F6G. Specifically, new application areas, support for even better quality network enabling novel applications, and improving the users experience. The topics of this workshop include:

• Enabling Optical Technologies for low-latency broadband communication

Abstract: The digital transformation of industrial automation is one of the most vibrant eco systems placing stringent requirements on the communication infrastructure. In this presentation we will highlight industry 4.0 applications, their requirements and initial results of proof-of-concept (PoC) experiments. We will also provide an outlook on currently emerging open lab infrastructures in Berlin that will enable collaborative work on future F5G and beyond industrial use cases and PoCs.
Biography: Johannes K. Fischer is heading a research group on data analytics and signal processing within the Department of Photonic Networks and Systems at Fraunhofer HHI. He (co)authored more than 140 publications. He is a senior member of IEEE and a member of the German VDE. He served in the Technical Program Committees of OECC and OFC.

Title: Real-Time Demonstration of Fiber-to-the-Room for >1Gb/s Home Networking
Abstract: Operators are facing challenges related to providing a “fiber-like” experience to the final users everywhere at home, as the wireless technologies (Wi-Fi) encounters more and more limitations in terms of reach, interference, bandwidth… Also, it is expected that the quantity of home devices to be connected will double towards 2030. This presentation will focus on a solution meeting those demands: Fiber-To-The-Room. It consists in reusing Passive Optical Networks technologies to provide an “in-house” fibre backbone terminated by Wi-Fi access points. We will present the results of a commercially available system cascading two tiers of PON (FTTH and FTTR), terminated by Wi-Fi access points, demonstrating more than 1Gb/s for each access point, PON robustness, low energy consumption, or low-cost.
Biographies: Fabienne Saliou received her Optronics Engineer degree in 2006 and M.Sc. degree in optical telecommunications in 2007 from the 'Ecole Nationale Supérieur des Sciences Appliquées et de Technologie' (ENSSAT) university in Lannion, France. She received a Ph.D. degree in electronics and communications from Telecom Paris Tech, Paris, France, in 2010. She is currently working with Orange Labs as a Research Engineer in the optical access network domain. Her research interests include improving the Fiber to the Home deployment and improving its capabilities in terms of reach, bit rate, and energy efficiency. This includes next generations PONs and mobile Xhauling networks with specific skills on the physical layer of TDM and WDM PONs.
Gaël Simon received his engineering degree in Physics and Photonics from the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Sciences Appliquées et de Technologie, Rennes 1 University, Rennes, France, in 2013. He was awarded his Ph.D degree in electronics and communications from Telecom Paris Tech, Paris, France, in 2016. His Ph.D. was conjunction with Orange Labs, where he studied dense wavelength division multiplexing introduction in optical access networks. He is currently working as a research engineer at Orange Labs, France, where he mainly studies optical access network evolutions, including physical layer innovations, but also the impacts of virtualization and software-defined control technologies on future optical access networks, mobile network transport, and evolutions of home LAN.

Title: Optical network evolution oriented at computing force network and metaverse
Abstract: The Computing force network, and emerging services such as metaverse, bring exciting visions for optical network to evolve to construct the fundamental infrastructure. This presentation aims to study the requirements on optical networks, including SPN for backhaul, OTN for backbone and PON for broadband access, discuss the network architecture, key features, and potential technical solutions. In addition to ultra-high bandwidth, low latency and high efficiency, the optical network should also be able to aware of the services and computing force, to provide corresponding transport.
Biography: Han Li graduated from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and obtained his Ph.D in 2002. He got the professorate senior engineer in 2015. He is currently the director of the China Mobile Research Institute. He has extensive knowledge of SPN, PTN, OTN, PON and synchronization technology, and has published more than 50 articles, 100 patents, and 200 ITU-T contributions. He is an editor of several ITU-T recommendations and IETF RFCs.

Title: Dynamic Satellite Optical Communication Networks
Abstract: Satellite communication network is becoming an important information infrastructure for 5G and 6G. Space optical communications will be an inevitable choice for satellite communication networks, especially for inter-satellite communications, due to the capability of high speed and long distance transmission. However, because the satellites are always moving around the earth, the satellite communication networks topology is changing all the time including the inter-satellite link (ISL) distance and ground-satellite link (GSL) connection, which brings many challenges for the satellite communication networks. This talk covers topics of control architecture, routing algorithm, signaling protocol, and survivability mechanism of satellite optical communication networks.
Biography: Yongli Zhao is a full professor at BUPT. During Jan. 2016 to Jan. 2017, he was a visiting scholar at UC Davis. Now, he is a Fellow member of IET, senior member of IEEE and OSA. His current research focuses on optical fiber networks, satellite optical communication networks, and quantum key distribution networks. Up to now, he has published more than 400 international journal and conference papers. He has granted more than 100 patents. He also participated in many international standards works, and he has submitted 90 drafts to ITU-T and IETF.

Biography: In the 1990s Ed Harstead led first gen WDM PON research efforts and standardization and implementation of first gen TDM PON technologies. Ed spent most of the 2000s in DWDM transport and PON product management. Since the 2010s he supports the Nokia CTO for Fixed Networks, with a focus on high speed PON.
